The Scientific Management Theory Fredrick W. It was believed that the most effective and efficient division of labour could best be determined by the concept of Scientific Management. Theory of Bureaucracy was developed by Max Weber as a succession of these researches. Bureaucracy is basically a formal system of organization and administration designed to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. There were several principles in this theory. Weber identified several factors there should be in a bureaucracy system. Simultaneously Henry Fayol identified 14 principles that should be vital to increasing the efficiency of the management process according to his perspective. These studies of Fayol and Weber laid the foundation of modern management theory. She also promoted the concept of ââ¬Å"cross functioningâ⬠which has been used in a great scale at present. Hawthorne effect is the discovery that a managerââ¬â¢s behaviour and leadership approach can affect the level of performance of employees. From this study emerged the concept of human relations movement. It is basically how the supervisors should be behaviourally trained to spice up workerââ¬â¢s motivation, cooperation and increase their productivity. Informal organization is one of the implications of Hawthorne effect. This is the system of behavioural rules and norms that come out in a group. The study of factors that have an impact on how individuals and groups react to in organizations has been identified as the organizational behaviour. Apart from these mentioned here the most significant approach was developed by Douglas McGregor. He supposed two different sets of assumptions which were named as Theory X and Theory Y. Management Science Theory This is a modern extension of Scientific Management Theory in this approach describes how precise quantitative techniques can be used in order to make the best use of organizational resources. Quantitative management emphasises on how arithmetic can be manipulated to achieve best practises in inventory and financial capital control. Deconstruction and Multiplicity of Self through Modern Technology The Internet has allowed a postmodern view of self to dominate and serve as the solution to a dilemma that modernism has perpetuated surrounding self perception. Such a dilemma includes the identity crisis. Having only one self is restricting and can be dangerous, especially if the self is viewed as ââ¬Å"badâ⬠by the individual/self or others. It becomes critical, in the modernist view of self, to like oneself or else one will have to either self-hate or self-destruct. Self destruction would mean to kill off or eliminate the self-defining characteristics that one dislikes. My Mother always told me: ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s never to late to be who you really areâ⬠. This advice functions to encourage combat against negative self-image that modernism cultivates. For some, this process is like clearing the slate. Starting from scratch will hopefully be refreshing to oneââ¬â¢s self-esteem and self-value, but starting over as the ââ¬Å"new youâ⬠can be a difficult an d scary adjustment as well. For the same reasons, labels and stereotypes control and shape oneââ¬â¢s identity. The postmodern, technological world loosens the powerful grip of modernismââ¬â¢s resulting restrictions on selfhood. Modernism promotes an either-or option for self being one thing or another (and, hopefully, that dichotomy is not the dangerous good-bad ultimatum). On the other hand, postmodernism allows for fluidity and does not condemn or pollute the entire self with one portion of self-identity. Additionally, the worry about a ââ¬Å"new youââ¬â¢s" role in society will never arise as the ââ¬Å"new youâ⬠is just ââ¬Å"another youâ⬠in a postmodern self concept. No one has one true self nor control over othersââ¬â¢ perceptions of oneââ¬â¢s selves. Therefore, one must come to terms with the fragmented, multiplicities of their own identity. Their self exists in the here-and-now, and is much less definable in simple categories. While others, then, cannot grasp and categorize your identity, the possibility exists, that neither can the self which is you. This presents a freeing and frustrating capacity for any individual worried about control. The postmodern, technology-age self is not contained. It is a limitless region abounding with environment-sensitive traits. We can imagine such a concept through the unlimited Internetââ¬âin the vast expanse called cyberspace. Viewing ourselves through, or actually as composed like, a machine unlocks such infinite possibilities in identity.

The Causes of Tsunami All tsunamis are caused by the sudden displacement of large volumes of water. All are the result of violent events with enough power to displace large volumes very rapidly. Moreover, Tsunamis are often referred to high waves of water caused by changes in the flow and surge of the ocean. On the other hand, Tsunamis can be caused by a few different factors, which are an earthquake, a large-scale undersea landslide, a submarine volcanic eruption (Cause of Tsunami, n. d. ). Firstly, the vast majority of tsunamis results from the earthquake.The earth's surface is covered by the continents and sea floor which are parts of the world-wide system of plates that are in the very slow motion. An earthquake occurs where the edges of plates run into one another, which are called faults or fault lines. The forces along faults sometimes can build-up over long periods of time. Therefore, when rocks finally break, the earthquake happens. For example, some features generated by th e forces released along the edges of plates faults are the Andes Mountains in South America, which occurred on land and the Aleutian Trench near Alaska, which occurred under water.When rapid and powerful faulting occurs near the ocean or underneath the ocean, the large earthquake will be generated and possibly being the tsunami (What causes tsunami? , n. d. ). The process of a happening of tsunami is complicated. The magnitude and depth of earthquake, the water depth in the region of tsunami generation, the amount of vertical motion of the sea floor, the rapidity of such motion, whether there is coincident subsidence of sediments and the efficiency which the energy is transferred from crust of the earth to water in the ocean are all parts of the generation mechanism of Tsunamis.The energy accumulates in the major plate until it exceeds the frictional forces between the two stuck plates. When this situation happens, the major plate snap back into an unrestrained position. This motion is suddenly the cause of the tsunami because it gives a gigantic push to the overlying water. Additionally, at the same time of the happening, the inland areas of the major plate are suddenly lowered (What causes Tsunamis? , 2012). However, not all earthquakes generate tsunamis. To generate tsunamis, earthquakes must occur underneath or near the ocean, be large and create movements in the sea floor.All oceanic regions of the world can experience tsunamis, but in the Pacific Ocean there is a much more frequent occurrence of large, destructive tsunamis because of the many large earthquakes along the margins of the Pacific Ocean. Secondly, underwater landslides, coastal landslides falling into the ocean can displace enough water to generate a tsunami. Undersea landslides occur when there is a large amount of sediment dislodged from the seafloor which displaces a water column and potentially creating tsunami. Land sliding into the sea is usually caused by an earthquake.It may also caus e destructive local tsunami (What causes tsunami? , n. d. ). For instance, there is a case in 1958 where Lituya Bay in Alaska faced a tsunami caused by rockslide which an enormous boulder was loosed by an earthquake and then fell into the bay. The mass of rock striking the bay's surface created a gigantic splash, which sent water wave to the height of 1720 feet (Lituya Bay Close Up, n. d. ). Last but not least, though less common, volcanic eruptions and submarine explosions which occur near or under the ocean can all cause sufficient displacement of water to generate a tsunami.These can be occurred in several ways. One possibility is destructive collapses of coastal. Inland and underwater volcanoes result in massive landslides. They break down and collapse, so they release large amounts of ash and debris into the water. In addition, pyroclastic flows, which are the mixtures of dense including hot blocks, ash, pumice, and gas, plunging down volcanic slopes into the water pushing wate r outwards. A volcano collapsing after an eruption also causes overlying water to drop suddenly. How does Hosseini present Baba Essay
Chapter 10 is a transitional chapter, set just after the Soviet invasion, which sees Baba and Amir fleeing Afghanistan for Pakistan. In this chapter Khaled Hosseini presents Baba in more details. We get to see Babaââ¬â¢s behaviour and his attitude towards other people and especially his son ââ¬â Amir. Hosseini focuses on Baba and he tries to express what this character is like, but is this the same Baba? Is this Baba we have met in previous chapters? The author of ââ¬Å"The Kite Runnerâ⬠decided to present Baba in this chapter as the hero. When Russian soldier demands ââ¬Å"a half hour with the lady in the back of the truckâ⬠. Babaââ¬â¢s response is mechanical. He stands up and he asks Russian officer ââ¬Å"Where his shame isâ⬠. We know by this time, that ââ¬Å"Baba saw the world in black and whiteâ⬠and when he decides to protect that woman he risks his life he proves his ideology. He knows that woman deserves a respect and it is natural reaction for him to back up her. Other people, such as Amir, donââ¬â¢t understand his behaviour. Amir is scared of loosing his father and he tries to stop him. Baba is not happy with his son conduct and he says: ââ¬Å"Havenââ¬â¢t I taught you anything? ââ¬Å". It also shows Babaââ¬â¢s disappointed. In chapter 3, Baba says: ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d never believe heââ¬â¢s my sonâ⬠. I think Baba becomes more disappointed with Amir and his performance each chapter. Amir is a coward. He is different to Baba. He proved this in previous chapters when Hassan got raped and Amir did not do anything to defend him. Baba is trying to protect that woman and he also is ready to sacrifice his life. Baba is the hero and Amir admits it too: ââ¬Å"Do you have to always be the hero? Canââ¬â¢t you just let it go for one? But I knew he couldnââ¬â¢t ââ¬â it wasnââ¬â¢t his natureâ⬠. Baba is a person who believes in only one crime, which is stealing. In that case, Russian soldier wanted to steal some womanââ¬â¢s privacy and her right to belong only to one man. When the officer started arguing with Baba and threatening him, Amirââ¬â¢s father became more confident and he was full of anger: ââ¬Å"Tell him heââ¬â¢d better kill me good with that first shot. Baba knows that he needs to escape from Afghanistan, to save himself and Amir, but the whole journey proves that its not about saving their lives but attesting some values and protecting other people too. When Baba finds out that they have been cheated by Karim, he becomes furious again, but this time he uses more violence towards a liar: ââ¬Å"Kamir slammed against the wall, his sandaled two feet above the floor. Wrapped around his neck were Babaââ¬â¢s hands. ââ¬Å". They all paid a price to get out of Afghanistan but it didnââ¬â¢t matter for smuggler because they excepted to get more. Baba is adamant and stubborn. ââ¬Å"He kept choking him until the young mother (â⬠¦ ) begged him to stop. ââ¬Å". She was the one who knew that if Baba would hurt Karim, there wouldnââ¬â¢t be a way for them to flee from there. Baba forgot about it, and everything that mattered was to teach Karim a lesson, as he was the one who wanted to steal their right to leave the country and live somewhere else, far from a war. ââ¬Å"Baba finally let goâ⬠. Even Amir admits that he ââ¬Å"didnââ¬â¢t want to see the murderous look on Babaââ¬â¢s faceâ⬠. I think that it was the first time when Amir got to that point when he saw Baba being so obstinate and angry. When all men pray for the rescue, Baba is the one who decided not to do so. They ask him why he wonââ¬â¢t join them, his answer is being given straight away: ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢ll save us is eight cylinders and a good carburettor. â⬠As we know that he always ââ¬Å"saw the world in black and white. â⬠He knows that God wonââ¬â¢t come from heaven and give them a hand. He is a realist and Khaled Hosseini shows this again, in chapter 10. Baba has been also shown as a person who loves his country no matter what happens and his behaviour proves that he is going to miss Afghanistan as he spent his whole life living there. ââ¬Å"He picked up a handful of dirt from the middle of unpaved road. He kissed the dirt. (â⬠¦ ) Stowed the box in his breast pocket, next to his heart. â⬠This is an example of a person loving their country. We could refer to Pope John Paul II who used to kiss ground of his motherland (Poland) whenever he was coming to visit his beloved country. Baba realises, that he might never come back to Afghanistan so that he chooses to have a piece of his land next to his heart for ever. Finally, the author presents Baba as a father too. When they all are in a truck, and they canââ¬â¢t breath easily, Amir starts to panic. Baba knows his son and he wants to make a journey easier to him. ââ¬Å"Baba tugged at my sleeve and something glowed green in the dark. (â⬠¦ ) Babaââ¬â¢s wristwatch. ââ¬Å". Baba knows that Amir is still frightened therefore he says: ââ¬Å"Think of something good (â⬠¦ ) Something happy. ââ¬Å". He helps his son. Even if he sometimes thinks that Amir is completely different to him, he knows that this is his son and every son needs his father, especially when he didnââ¬â¢t experience motherly tenderness. To recap, Baba has been shown in two different lights in chapter 10. The writer decided to confirm that Baba sees the world in black and white and he also showed that Amirââ¬â¢s father can be quite violent and adamant just to protect norms and values that he sees as a priority. On the other hand, Hosseini showed that Baba can be quite caring towards his son. Personally, I think that this is Baba, weââ¬â¢ve met in pervious chapters but in chapter 10 we get to know him better and he proves that he is not a coward and he can take action in a point of honour. Baba is a role model to me, even if he doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be a good father I think that he is just trying to teach Amir how to live a life and how not to become a coward. Amir might not understand it but Baba is a reasonable and intelligent man who has his own ideology and he never makes any mistakes. Baba is the hero, patriot and a good and wise man.

However, while reading Fischers novel Paul Reveres Ride, one's whole opinion changed, and my knowledge increased. After reading this novel, the reader will come to learn that Paul Revere was not just the simple artisan and messenger that he has been portrayed to be throughout our history. First of all, Fischer draws his readers attention by not starting out in the traditional fashion. He went into detail, and gave tremendous insight on who Paul Revere really was. Fischer started by giving Reveres perception of American lifestyle at this time, and ended with the battle of Lexington and Concord. The subject matter of Fischers novel is not the Revolution itself, but Paul Revere. Ambiguity is an important part of the legend of Paul Revere. Fischer starts in his novel by refuting old myths of Paul Revere. The common perception of Paul Revere was that he was just a town crier. In response, Fischer wrote, " The historical Paul Revere was much more than merely a midnight messenger. He was also an organizer of collective effort in the American Revolution" (Fischer, 115). One purpose that can be inferred by Fischer's writing is the fact that it is to study the series of events as portrayed by Revere.
